Training nurses and midwives. Saving mothers and babies.

Every mother should have a safe birth, and every newborn a healthy start. But in many parts of the world, even routine deliveries can become life-threatening. Too often, nurses and midwives serve without the training they need.

A trained nurse or midwife may be the difference between tragedy and a new life.

We support life-saving education at the Nursing and Midwifery Development Center in Erbil, Iraq, giving providers the skills they need to save lives at birth.

We invest in one of the most effective ways to save mothers and babies:

training the people who care for them

The Golden Minute

The first 60 seconds of life are critical. In that moment, a trained provider can make the difference between a tragedy and a first breath. We teach the global Helping Babies Breathe curriculum, a proven model shown to reduce newborn deaths by up to 47% in the first 24 hours.

The Critical Hour

The first hour after birth can be dangerous for a new mother. Globally, severe bleeding causes 1 in 4 maternal deaths. We provide specialized Bleeding After Birth training, giving providers the life-saving skills to potentially reduce maternal mortality by up to 72%.

The Multiplier Effect

One trained midwife is a lifeline for an entire community. Over the course of her career, a single provider will attend to more than 1,000 births. Your support creates a multiplier effect that can impact thousands of families, ensuring that one gift protects a legacy of safe births.

When births are attended by well-trained professionals, maternal and newborn
deaths drop by more than 80%.
